Privacy policy

keeps your things on a server you own, in your office or at home. This policy explains the little does see: this website, and the few online services that help work.
The short version
- runs on a server you own and control. Your files, photos, mail, calendars, contacts and conversations stay on that server. We can't see them and we don't collect them.
- This website has no cookies, analytics, advertising or tracking.
- A few services we run pass small things through for your server, such as an encrypted notification or a sign-in token. They keep nothing they don't need.
- We never sell personal information, and we don't share it.
Who we are
is Jake Thomas Biddle, a sole trader in Queensland, Australia, trading as SOLEL-IO (ABN 12 623 358 183). In this policy, "we", "us" and "our" mean . You can reach us at hello@solel.io.
on your own server
is software you install on your own hardware. The accounts, passwords, files and everything else you put into it are stored on that hardware, under your control. We don't run your server and have no access to it. The people who look after your server decide who in your household can see what.
Your server reaches out to the internet for a few things:
- Updates. It checks for new versions of and downloads them from GitHub. GitHub sees your server's IP address when it does, and GitHub's privacy statement applies.
- Downloads from solel.io, such as the faces of ready-made Sols, when you choose to use them.
- Our online services, described below, when you use the features that need them.
- Services you connect yourself, such as your mail provider, or an outside AI or voice service if you choose one. Their own privacy policies cover what your server sends them.
This website
- solel.io uses no cookies, analytics, advertising or tracking scripts.
- Our web server may record the usual technical details of each request: IP address, time, the page asked for and the browser. We use them only to keep the site secure and working, we don't share them, and we keep them for no longer than 30 days.
- If you email us, we keep your message and address so we can reply.
Online services we run
These run on our own server in Queensland, Australia.
Notifications for the Solel iPhone app (push.solel.io)
Apple only delivers notifications to an iPhone app through its maker, so your server sends notifications for the Solel iPhone app through us. Your server encrypts each one for your phone before it reaches us. We pass on a sealed message we can't read, along with your phone's Apple push token, which is sealed into the address your server uses. We don't keep a list of phones or a copy of any message.
Signing in to Mail with Microsoft or Google (solel.io/oauth/mail/)
When you connect an Outlook or Gmail account to Mail by signing in, Microsoft or Google sends you back to this page, which passes you on to Mail on your own server. The page handles a one-time sign-in code, which is useless without a secret proof that never leaves your server. It keeps a note of where to send you back in your browser's local storage for up to 20 minutes.
Gmail sign-in relay (solel.io/oauth/google/token)
Google requires a secret with every request Mail makes to sign in to Gmail, and that secret can't ship inside . So Mail on your server sends these requests through this relay, which adds the secret and passes them to Google. Your sign-in tokens pass through the relay on their way back to your server, about once an hour for each account. The relay doesn't store or log them, and it never sees your mail.
licence check (licences.solel.io)
If your organisation uses , your server checks its licence with us once a day. It sends the licence number and how many people are using it, and nothing about who they are or what they do. For each licence we keep only the latest check-in: that seat count and when it arrived. We use it to keep your licence up to date.
Google user data
This section covers Solel Mail, the mail app in , when you connect a Gmail account by signing in with Google.
- What Mail accesses. With your permission, Mail gets full access to your Gmail (the
https://mail.google.com/scope) and your email address. Mail uses them to show, search, organise and send your mail over IMAP and SMTP from your own server. - Where it's kept. Your mail, and the encrypted token Mail uses to stay signed in, are stored only on your own Solel server. doesn't receive, store or read your Gmail. The only Google data that reaches us is the sign-in tokens passing through the relay above, which are never stored or logged.
- How it's used. Only to provide the Mail features you use. If you turn them on, that includes summaries and draft replies, which Jethro makes on your server with the AI model set up there.
- What we don't do. We don't sell Google user data or use it for advertising, and we don't transfer it to anyone. Nobody at reads it. We don't use it to develop, improve or train AI or machine-learning models.
- Removing access. Remove the account in Mail's settings to delete its sign-in from your server. You choose whether to keep the mail already copied there. You can also take away Mail's access at any time in your Google Account, at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Solel Mail's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Signing in with Microsoft works the same way, without the relay. Mail talks to Microsoft directly from your server, and your mail and sign-in stay on your server.
Sharing and other countries
We don't sell personal information or share it with anyone, unless the law requires us to. Some services your server uses are run by companies overseas, such as GitHub, Apple, Google and Microsoft. Their own privacy policies apply to them.
Children
lets whoever runs a server make accounts for children, and those accounts live on that server. Our website and services aren't aimed at children, and we don't knowingly collect children's personal information.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing hello@solel.io. Since almost everything lives on your own server, whoever looks after it can usually do this for you directly.
If you have a privacy complaint, email us and we'll respond within 30 days. If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the date at the top. We won't change how Mail uses Google user data without asking you first.
